I am Dr. Mahasweta Sarkar – Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and I serve as the Director of the WIreless Networks and Communication (WINC) Laboratory at San Diego State University (SDSU). I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (Summa Cum Laude) from SDSU and my Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from University of California, San Diego.
My research focuses on wireless networks, with emphasis on developing artificial intelligence-infused MAC layer algorithms for applications that have high social impact like precision agriculture, healthcare, brain-computer interfaces and connecting-the-unconnected. Along with my students and research collaborators of my WIreless Networks and Communication (WINC) Lab, we strive to make the world a more connected and better place!
Currently, I serve as the Senior Associate Dean of Global Campus(formerly the College of Extended Studies) at SDSU. In this role, I leverage my expertise and leadership to enhance the university’s global reach and educational initiatives.
I welcome you to explore more about our work at the WINC Lab and invite you to join our research group!

Current Research
- Wireless Health.
- Cloud Computing.
- Re-defining socialization-the digital way.
- Optimizing energy-delay trade-offs in wireless networks.
- Hierarchical Heterogeneous Networks – peaceful coexistance of Micro, Fento and Macro cells.
- MAC layer channel scheduling schemes for dynamic specturm allocation (Multi-channel issues).
Recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Faculty Award
I am honored to have received the 2023 Distinguished Faculty Award. This award signifies achievement and success, recognizing distinguished faculty across SDSU’s academic colleges, Library and Information Access, and SDSU Imperial Valley Campus. The Monty Awards celebrate individuals who have made substantial contributions to San Diego State University, the San Diego community, or California, both nationally and internationally.
I was born and raised in India and arrived in the U.S. in 1996. My fascination with the internet led me to envision a world where real-time connections could make it smaller. My research is geared towards high social impact, aiming to bring connectivity to people in health, education, and unconnected regions worldwide through drone networking.
